Background

Central government departments spend around £400 billion a year on the day-to-day running costs of public services. Most of these services are provided by the 250,000 members of the Operational Delivery Profession and include customer services such as issuing passports and helping people into work.

Our work will build on our operational management good practice guides, which identify gaps in operational capability to provide services across government and include examples of good practice.

Scope

The report will bring together our findings on operational capability and provide insights on what government needs to get right to provide better services. It will:

  • set out roles and responsibilities for improving capability in operational delivery across government
  • provide insights on the capabilities that matter for good operational delivery and good practice examples that showcase how to apply them
  • set out what government is doing to improve operational capability
