Gareth Davies, the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) of the National Audit Office, has reported on the 2019-20 accounts of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
He has qualified his audit opinion because BEIS incurred net expenditure of £19,483m, breaching the limit authorised by Parliament of £14,588m by £4,895m. This is because of commitments under the Small Business Grants Fund and Retail Hospitality and Leisure Grants Fund schemes set up in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
