Our work in numbers:

Financial impact 

  • We made financial impacts totalling £1.59 billion in 2023. For every £1 spent we delivered an impact of £17 through either reduced costs, improved service delivery or other benefits to people
  • Our work helped ensure that the public sector shared the benefits of refinanced Public Private Partnership and Private Finance Initiative contracts. This has led to benefits to the taxpayer of more than £1 billion
  • Our work also informed Ofgem’s approach to setting price controls for electricity networks, saving consumers billions of pounds between 2021 and 2028. In 2023 our work saved consumers £80 million

Our achievements 

  • 95% of our recommendations to government were accepted or partially accepted
  • 73% of senior officials in the bodies we audit agreed that our work leads to better outcomes

  • 94% of MPs said we were effective at supporting Parliament to hold government to account and scrutinise public services
  • 98% of senior officials from the bodies we audit said we are independent
