The Department’s aim is:

“To create a free, fair and responsible Big Society by putting power in the hands of citizens, neighbourhoods and councils.”

The Department is responsible for government policy on local government, housing, planning and fire and rescue. It oversees the localism agenda, which seeks to redistribute power away from Whitehall. The Department also has responsibility for communities, neighbourhoods and regeneration.
